Treatment of hyperhidrosis

After exclusion of pathological causes of hyperhidrosis and after applying he Emla cream, a series of intradermal injections with botulinum toxin is administered (armpits, hands).

Botulinum toxin

Indications

• Hand, feet, and armpit hyperhidrosis

Treatment description

Botulinum toxin – a very potent natural toxin that inhibits the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting impulses between nerves and muscles. Botulinum toxin works by blocking connections between nerve endings and innervated muscles, i.e. it blocks the so-called nerve-muscle synapses. Therefore, no contractions appear in the paralysed muscle. Botulinum is equally effective in men as in women.
In medicine, botulinum toxin is used to treat various diseases such as strabismus, or neurological diseases with excessive muscle tension. Its application gives very good results in removing excessive sweating in the armpits, hands and feet. The treatment consists of several small injections; it’s almost painless. You can return to normal activity and daily routine immediately after the procedure.

Is the treatment painful?

Many patients compare it to an ant or mosquito bite lasting just few seconds. The procedure does not require local anesthesia. For the sake of patient’s comfort, sometimes an anaesthetic in cream (e.g. EMLA) is applied about 1 hour before the procedure.

Post-treatment recommendations

• avoid massages at injection sites
• you must not consume alcohol within 12 hours of treatment

After the procedure, the patient can return to his everyday activities. The puncture marks are almost invisible.

Contraindications

• Neuro-muscular conduction disorders (myasthenia gravis, Lambert Eaton syndrome)
• Hypersensitivity to preparation ingredients (human albumin)
• Use of the following medications or a period of up to 1 week from their discontinuation:
  • aminoglycosides (streptomycin, gentamicin, amikacin, kanamycin, etc.)
  • aminoquinolones (chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine)
  • D-penicillamine
  • cyclosporine A
  • tubocurarin, pancuronium, galamine
  • succinylcholine
  • lincomycin, tetracycline, polymixin
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding
• Skin inflammation and active skin infections (herpes, acne)
• Coagulation disorders

Side effects

• the pain at injection;
• small haematomas that may occur at the injection site if the needle hits a small vessel;
• minor, temporary swelling with a slight tingling sensation at the injection site;

All these reactions are temporary, most of them usually subside after a few days.
